CSOs Charge President Tinubu to Come Clean on Controversial IGP Tenure Extension

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria have charged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come clean over the controversy surrounding the recent tenure extension of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The CSOs include RULAAC – Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre; Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre); Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED); Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD); African Centre for Media & Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) and Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC).

UPDATED: Hardship: Groups endorse protest, urge govt not to suppress demonstrations through intimidation, excessive use of force.

Local activists and civil society organisations want the Nigerian government and security agencies to allow citizens who are dissatisfied with government policies to protest peacefully. The 37 civil society groups said peaceful protest is fundamental to democratic governance and that this right is a cornerstone of any democratic society and a critical means for citizens to express their dissatisfaction, demand accountability, and advocate for change.
