Theme: “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants – Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihood”
The 21st Century Community Empowerment for Youth and Women Initiative (CEYWI) joins the global community in celebrating World Wildlife Day 2026 under the theme “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants – Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihood.”
This year’s theme highlights the critical importance of medicinal and aromatic plants in sustaining human health, preserving cultural heritage, and supporting livelihoods, especially in rural and indigenous communities.
For centuries, communities across Nigeria and the world have relied on medicinal plants for healthcare, nutrition, and economic survival. These natural resources form the backbone of traditional medicine and are increasingly important in modern pharmaceutical research. However, unsustainable harvesting, deforestation, habitat destruction, and climate change threaten many valuable plant species. Without urgent conservation efforts, we risk losing not only biodiversity, but also traditional knowledge and economic opportunities tied to these plants.
CEYWI calls on: Government authorities, Environmental stakeholders, Research institutions, Youth and women groups and Community leaders
To promote sustainable use, conservation, and awareness of medicinal and aromatic plants.
As an organization committed to empowerment and sustainable development, CEYWI encourages young people and women to participate actively in environmental education, conservation initiatives, and green entrepreneurship. Protecting medicinal and aromatic plants is not only about conserving nature — it is about protecting our health systems, preserving our cultural identity, and securing sustainable livelihoods for future generations.
Together, let us safeguard our natural heritage.
Happy World Wildlife Day 2026.
